Gold Scrap Refining |

The
photos to the right tell the story of refining gold scrap. It starts when we
receive a gold scrap lot from a jeweler, dental lab, dentist or other
collector. We accept dental solids, karat solids, grindings, sweeps, dust,
carpets or anything that may contain a significant amount of gold, silver,
platinum or palladium. If our received weights are different from your
weights listed, you receive a phone call before further processing of the
scrap.
The
next step is to melt the high grade scrap lot and pour it into a homogenous
bar.
Low
grade sweeps, filters and carpet are roasted in a high temparature oven
before crushing, blending, screening (not shown). The classical fire assays
for low grade dust are similar to that of the high grade fire assay process.
Representative
samples of the high grade bar are typically top and bottom drillings. However,
snap vacuum tube can be used for large bars of precious metals. Drillings and
a vacuum tube metal samples are shown at the left.
The
homogeneous bar is then assayed to determine the precious metal content. The
classical fire assay is the assay of choice in the industry, especially for
gold determination. The samples are weighed on an analytical scale, wrapped
in lead and placed on bone ash cupels and run in a muffle furnace to high red
hot temparatures. The remaining bead is then run through acid and annealed to
finally yield .9999 fine gold. Two samples of each scrap lot are run in
parallel to insure accuracy.
The
jewelry bar shown weighs about 10 troy onces, worth about $2,000 at the time
this photo was taken.
