EPA Compliance Information |

Maguire &
Strickland precious metals refining legally disposes of film and fixer solution to ensure
EPA compliance. We service the medical, dental, chiropractic, veterinarian,
graphics and printing and industrial engineering markets. We purchase
high grade silver flake from the same markets. Maguire & Strickland
guarantees that it processes, stores, handles and ships hazardous or
potentially hazardous material or waste in a manner consistent with
any and all Federal, State and locally mandated laws, regulations and
procedures and is in compliance with Resource Conservation and Recovery
Act as passed by congress in 1976.
Very Small Quantity Generators- Transportation Regulations
Minnesota
Statutes § 116.07 subdivision 2 was amended in the 1989 legislature
to provide a partial exemption from hazardous waste regulation for certain
hazardous wastes.
Essentially
hazardous waste generators who are eligible to qualify for the exclusion
are generators of less than 100kg/month (220 lbs. /month) of hazardous
waste. This Very Small Quantity Generators category allows VSQG's to
transport photographic fixer waste solutions or film to a refiner without
a transporter license by MnDOT.
Compliance Silver Check Canisters
Spent fixer
contains small amounts of the heavy metal silver in the waste stream.
A steel wire ion exchange compliance canister eliminates the heavy metal
silver from the waste stream in order for the generator to be in compliance
with federal, state and local standards. That is, there is a federal
mandate to remove silver from the fixer solutions which is generated
during film processing.
The steel
wire compliance canister trailing the film processor removes silver
particles to less than 5 parts per million to meet EPA standards for
hazardous materials.
The EPA wishes
to have heavy metals eliminated from waste streams and as silver is
a heavy metal, a waste industry has evolved to accomodate the EPA, state
and local agencies. Hence, Maguire & Strickland installs compliance
canisters for the medical, dental and printing industries, focusing
canisters on the medical and dental industries.
